Candied Orange Peel: Recipe #91

After a nice holiday break, it’s back to food blogging! I have a bunch of recipes to catch you all up on that we made over the holidays, including this one with leftover orange peels. Why throw them out when you can reuse them into something as yummy as candied orange peel?

This is part of our 1,000 Food Experiments to create sustainable meals for our family and hopefully yours.

Ingredients ($4 total)

2 oranges, peeled – $0.50
3 cups + 1 cup white sugar – $3.48
3 cups water – free

Directions for Candied Orange Peel

1. Wash the oranges first. Cut the tops and bottoms off the oranges, then peel them and slice the peels into strips.

2. Cook the strips in a large pot of boiling water for 15 minutes, then drain them. Rinse in cool water and drain again.

3. In a medium pot, bring 3 cups of sugar and 3 cups of water to a boil over medium high heat. Stir to make sure the sugar is dissolved, then add the orange peels. Bring it back to a boil, then turn the heat down to medium low and simmer for 45 minutes until the peel is nice and soft. 

Drain, then toss the peel in the remaining 1 cup of sugar on parchment or foil. Be sure to coat it thoroughly. Cover with another piece of parchment and let stand for 1-2 days until the sugar is dry. Store in the freezer for use as snacks or in other baking recipes!
